You should now be deep into the writing process for your paper!  Make good use of class time, but also spend time on your writing outside of class.

Are you having trouble with the "hook" for your paper?  Here are some suggestions:

  • A quote from a well-known person
  • An anecdote or story that relates, real or made up
  • Striking statistics
  • A common misconception
  • Interesting fact or definition
  • A joke (use carefully)
  • A rhetorical question (often overused, use carefully)
  • Involve a contradiction
  • Create an image, simile, or metaphor
  • Ask a question that your reader will want to learn the answer to
